Abstract
WE report here on some effects due to boron in Ni-C melts. A number of interesting and hitherto unnoted features of graphite growth have been observed. The significance of these observations is that they demonstrate an important mechanism of a morphology change in graphite growing from solution. We show that the growth changes can be attributed to a concentration of boron in a boundary layer at the liquid–solid interface. Growth interfaces break down and morphology changes result. In particular, we have observed both scroll and spherulitic forms.
