Observations on the Hydraulics of Ascidia

A Corrigendum to this article was published on 29 November 1969

Abstract

ASCIDIANS contract arid eject a stream of water from the branchial chamber at fairly regular intervals during siphoning activity and there are several records of the movements associated with this1,2. The object of the present work was to monitor the activity of Ascidia nigra, and A. interrupta by continuously recording the pressures developed in the branchial chamber, to relate pressure fluctuations to changes in body dimensions and to compare the pattern of activity in these two species.
