Morphological Relationship of Polyribosomes and Myosin Filaments in Developing and Regenerating Skeletal Muscle

Abstract

Heywood and Rich1 have reported that polyribosomes containing varying numbers of ribosomes appeared during myogenesis in the chick embryo and they suggested a correlation between polyribosomes which were of different lengths, on the one hand, and the formation of specific muscle proteins on the other. We have examined developing and regenerating muscle tissue with the electron microscope in order to determine whether a spatial relationship exists between the polyribosomes and the evolving muscle structures. A consistent and orderly relationship between the polyribosomes and the myosin filaments is evident.
