Sliding Brushes in the Canberra Homopolar Generator

Abstract

THE Canberra homopolar generator, which is in use in the Engineering Physics Department of the Australian National University, is a large storage machine in which the 580 MJ of kinetic energy of rotation of its two 40-ton rotors can be delivered electrically to experimental areas in times as short as 1 s. Its maximum output voltage is 1,000 V and the maximum current is 1,600,000 A.
