Phenylketonuria and Intelligence: Trimodal Response to Dietary Treatment

Abstract

The frequency distribution of 110 phenylketonuric quotients has been found to be trimodal, and children who fell into the three modes responded differently to dietary treatment. This could account for conflicting reports of the success or failure of dietary treatment; and question the simplistic disease and treatment model of enzyme deficiency disorders.
