Dehydration of Escherichia coli Ribosomes in Air without Loss of Activity

Abstract

RIBOSOMES are complex structures with high degrees of hydration1–5. We report here that suspensions of Escherichia coli ribosomes can be dried in air without appreciable loss of activity. ‘Sephadex’ and spermidine play a crucial part in protecting ribosomes during the drying process.
