Heterogeneity of Isoantisera against Spermatozoa in Hyperimmunized Mice

Abstract

INCREASING attention has recently been paid to the part played by specific antibodies against spermatozoa from the point of view of problems of infertility1 and developing immunological methods of contraception2–4. Although numerous assays have been developed for detecting anti-spermatozoal activity5, as far as we know there have been no attempts to characterize the antibodies involved. In the preliminary studies described here, sera from hyperimmunized animals were fractionated by gel filtration on ‘Sephadex G-200’ and the activity of 19S and 7S classes was assessed by the sperm agglutination and passive haemagglutination tests. Studies of this type are important in determining the nature of antibodies responsible for infertility.
