Abstract
COPULATORY activity in pairs of oppositely sexed rhesus monkeys (Macaca, mulatta) is influenced by the hormonal status of the female1–3. Whereas the subcutaneous administration of oestrogen to the ovariectomized partner restored the sexual activity of the pair to the high levels characteristic of intact females at mid-cycle4, progesterone together with oestrogen resulted in a decrease in mounting activity and in the occurrence of ejaculation5,6. Rhythms in mutual grooming activity were also hormone dependent7.
