Suppression of Contact Hypersensitivity and Acute Inflammation by Anti-complement Serum

Abstract

IN an analysis of the effect of anti-lymphocyte serum, it has been found that the intravenous injection of the serum—just before skin testing—inhibits the manifestations of contact hypersensitivity to 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) and acute inflammation caused by intradermal injection of turpentine1,2. We interpreted this as being an effect on the peripheral manifestations of the reactions, and not related to the central effect found in lymphoid tissue2. It seemed likely that both these effects could have been the result of a depletion in the concentration of circulating complement as a result of the in vivo immune reaction involving membranous antigens3.
