Dimensions of Microfibrillar Elements in Fungal Walls

Abstract

THE residual microfibrillar elements of the cell walls of three fungi have been measured after chemical removal of matrix materials. The fungi Phytophthora parasitica, Neurospora crassa and Schizophyllum commune were selected because accurate and detailed chemical analyses of their wall components are available1–6. Statistically significant differences have been found between the dimensions of these microfibrillar elements.
