Electrophoretic Study of Immunoglobulin on the Lymphocyte Surface

Abstract

IT is generally agreed that at least some lymphocytes carry immunoglobulins with antibody properties on their surface. It is still a matter of discussion whether or not these immunoglobulins are synthesized by the cell itself, and whether their presence is related to lymphocyte immunocompetence. It has been shown, however, that lymphoid cells from subjects immunized against bacteria are able to immobilize the specific antigen on their surface. Nevertheless, because of technical difficulties, it is very hard to demonstrate directly the presence of gamma globulins on the cell membrane; even very sensitive methods, such as immunonuorescence, have given variable and inconsistent results1,2.
