Haemoglobin Hammersmith (β 42 (CD1) Phe→Ser)

Abstract

The forty-second amino-acid of the β-chain of human haemoglobin and its equivalent in all known globins (CD1) is phenylalanine; it stabilizes the haem by direct contact. In Haemoglobin Hammersmith, replacement by serine causes instability of the molecule and thereby severe haemolytic Heinz body anaemia.
