Abstract
THERE have been several experiments in which the turbulent skin friction in pipe flow is reduced by adding certain soluble macromolecular polymers to a flowing solvent. The polymers do not seem to affect the turbulence in the core of the flow1, but rather cause a thickening of the viscous sublayer2. Drag reduction, it seems, requires the presence of a wall.
