Abstract
EXTENSIVE investigations1 have been carried out on the packing and subsequent stability of randomly packed beds of equal, rigid spheres. It was of specific interest, therefore, to obtain precise information on the limiting packing density which can be obtained. Qualitative values ranging between 0.60 and 0.64 have usually been obtained, depending on the mode of packing, and Scott2 actually measured this value very carefully for “dense” and “loose” random packings of bed sizes up to 10,000 balls and then extrapolated it to infinitely sized beds. In the present investigation Scott's work with non-rigid containers has been extended.
