Abstract
POLYVINYLPYRROLIDONE (PVP), a commercial organic chemical which bears a close physical resemblance to plasma protein, has been found to have a strong inhibitory action on viruses without appearing significantly toxic to animals. Cells pretreated with PVP showed resistance to infection with herpes simplex and vaccinia viruses in vitro. No effects were observed which could be put down to direct inactivation or neutralization of the infectivity of the viruses.
