Inhibitory Effects of Other Antibiotics on Bacterial Morphologic Changes induced by Penicillin G

Abstract

ALTHOUGH it has been suggested that tetracycline and chloramphenicol antagonize the antimicrobial activity of penicillin in vitro and in vivo1–6, several investigators do not agree with these conclusions7–9 and have suggested that variation in methods of assay and experimental conditions makes the interpretation of results very difficult. We carried out this work in order to investigate the problem using a different method from those used in previous experiments. Tests were, therefore, carried out to determine whether the addition of tetracyclines, chloramphenicol, and other antibiotics would prevent the formation of spheroplasts, a step which precedes the lysis of bacteria exposed to penicillin.
