Abstract
TRENTIN et al.1 demonstrated that hamsters inoculated at birth with adenovirus 12 develop a high incidence of malignant tumours, and that viral multiplication does not seem to occur under these conditions. On the other hand, adenovirus 5 is apparently not oncogenic for hamsters2, but it has been reported to induce a lethal infection in new-born animals including lesions of liver cells similar to those observed in cultured human epithelial cells in which the virus is multiplying3. Further investigations4 have recently shown that the pathogenicity of adenovirus 5 for new-born hamsters depends on the virus doses inoculated, no pathological symptoms being observed below 108 T.C.I.D. 50.
