Abstract
PREVIOUSLY it was demonstrated that in a number of animal systems the primary antibody response is made up of two distinct phases1–5. The initial antibody appearing in the serum is a high molecular weight antibody, 19S. Later, the lower molecular weight 7S antibody appears and, as it rises, the levels of 19S antibody decline. Smith0 and Svehag and Mandel7 reported that X-ray treatment of normal rabbits resulted in prolonged 19S antibody synthesis, but it suppressed 7S γ-globulin synthesis. Smith6 and Sahiar and Schwartz8,9 reported that 6-mercaptopurine given to normal rabbits, while prolonging 19S antibody production, may also abolish 7S antibody synthesis. Blinkoff10 noted a preferential inhibitory effect of methotrexate on 7S as opposed to 19S antibody production in the mouse.
