Electron Spin Resonance Spectrum of NH+2SO3

Abstract

CHANGES in the electron spin resonance spectra of various carbon1,2 and nitrogen3,4 centred π-radicals on cooling to low temperatures prompted us to re-examine the spectra of the radical NH+2SO3 trapped in irradiated sulphamic acid5. From the earlier work of Rowlands and Whiffen5 it appears that at 300° K there is rapid re-orientation of the NH+2 group between two equivalent positions, so that the two protons are equivalent for all orientations of the radical in the magnetic field of the spectrometer. At 77° K a marked increase in the magnitude of the hyperfine interaction of the unpaired electron with the 14N nucleus was noted for the orientation H0 parallel to the crystallographic b-axis. It was suggested that this might be due to changes in the radical geometry.
