In contrast to doublet and triplet which define an arrangement of two or three nucleotides, respectively, along the helix axis (or the ribose-phosphate backbone), the terms ‘pairs’ and ‘triples’ are used to designate (hydrogen-bonded) arrangements in a plane perpendicular to the helix axis.

Assuming an average molecular weight of 350 per nucleotide residue, model I would give three branches of about 24 nucleotides (mol. wt. 8,500) each, plus two loops of five nucleotides (mol. wt. 1,800) each, totalling a molecular weight of about 29,000. In Model II two branches with 27 nucleotides (mol. wt. 9,500), one branch with 15 nucleotides (mol. wt. 5,000) and two loops with five nucleotides (mol. wt. 1,800) each would add up to about 28,000 mol. wt. Similar considerations hold for the loop containing model III. It should be pointed out that models II and III could be different in different tRNAs, for example, two branches with about 30 residues (mol. wt. 11,500), one strand with about 10 residues and the two loops (mol. wt. 3,500), totalling about 29,000 mol. wt.
