Abstract
THERE is some evidence that tumour cell surfaces are in a hyperanionic state which could be associated with lowered intercellular adhesion and contact inhibition of mitosis1,2. If cells of tumour tissues have a higher anionic surface charge or the hyperanionic state lasts for a greater portion of the intermitotic cycle than other growing cells of the body, it should be possible to accumulate cations in favour of the tumour cell surface. By coupling cytotoxic drugs to these cations it might be further possible to attain lethal toxicity in tumour cells before destroying other vital tissues.
