Release of Ganglioside from Guinea-pig Lung Tissue during Anaphylaxis

Abstract

RECENTLY the chemical structures of the gangliosides have been elucidated1. Besides their occurrence in brain, Svennerholm has isolated a ganglioside (believed to be N-acetylneuraminic acid (2–3) galactosyl-β-(1–4) glucosyl acyl sphingosine) from human spleen2 and human lung3. A similar substance has been isolated from guinea-pig lung in this laboratory, and also from crude extracts of the slow-reacting substance of anaphylaxis.
