Post-irradiation Recovery of Escherichia coli

Abstract

RADIATION sensitivity of Escherichia coli strains is influenced by conditions for growth prior to and after radiation exposure. Stapleton and Engel1 have shown that E. coli B/r (CSH) grown in a buffered-peptone medium developed higher X-ray resistance. The cells grown in rich medium, however, might have become more exacting in their nutritional requirements and their recovery was limited on basal media2. At the same time, the recovery of ultra-violet or X-irradiated cells was higher when they were subjected to sub-optimal growth conditions3–5.
