Lowering Effect of Neostigmine on Plasma Free Fatty Acids

Nature volume 204, pages 888889 (28 November 1964) | Download Citation

THE actions of a number of drugs provide evidence that the sympathetic nervous system functions in the mobilization of free fatty acids. Epinephrine, norepinephrine and isoproterenol cause an elevation of free fatty acid levels whereas blocking drugs such as dichloroisoproterenol1, pronethalol2 and N-isopropyl methoxamine3,4 have been reported to block the elevation of free fatty acid due to injection of one or more of these sympathomimetic substances. The present communication describes the ability of another type of agent, the cholinesterase inhibitor neostigmine methylsulphate, to lower fasting levels of plasma free fatty acid in the conscious dog and to antagonize the epinephrine-induced release of free fatty acid from the rat epididymal fat pad in vitro.
