Site of Action of Copper in Photosynthesis

Abstract

EARLY observations on the presence of copper in chloroplasts1 and the inhibition of photosynthesis by several reagents which are regarded as specific copper antagonists2 established the concept that this element is perhaps a functional component of the photosynthetic system. Recent findings on the presence of a cytochrome photo-oxidase in chloroplasts3 and the subsequent isolation of a copper-protein (plastocyanin) with characteristics identical to those of cytochrome photo-oxidase4 provide additional support for a specific role of copper in photosynthesis.
