Kinetic Evidence for Nucleus Cluster Formation in Solid Decompositions

Abstract

OVERALL topokinetic equations can be extended to take account of time-dependent nucleation functions other than the random law modified by ingestion1,2; but no analytic treatment of non-random spatial arrangements of nucleation sites has appeared. Apart from photo-micrographs of partially decomposed barium azide showing barium nuclei in clusters and arrays3,4, and some single crystal investigations5, there is little published evidence of the need for such a theoretical extension. However, recent kinetic evidence has suggested the existence of non-random arrangements of two kinds.
