Abstract
THE total adenosine-triphosphatase (ATP-ase) activity of erythrocytes can be divided into two portions, one of which is inactive in the absence of sodium and potassium ions, or in the presence of ouabain; the potassium-dependent fraction is associated with active ion transport in the cell1,2. Recent reports have suggested that X-irradiation (0.9–4.5 kr.) of erythrocytes inhibits both the active ion transport and the specific ATP-ase associated with this process3,4. We have re-investigated this problem to determine whether ATP-ase inhibition could account for the loss of potassium ion from X-irradiated erythrocytes.
