Abstract
THE low ideal (Raoult's law) solubility of hydrogen chloride has revealed the factors determining the real solubility of hydrogen chloride in a considerable number of compounds. From the data on the solubility expressed as moles of HCl per mole of an organic compound containing oxygen there appears to be a remarkable correlation between the solubility and the basic (or hydrogen bonding) function of the oxygen atom1. Extension of this work to observations on certain sulphonyl compounds2 naturally led to the examination of mercaptans and thioethers. Solubility of hydrogen halides (HCl, HBr and HI) in these compounds concerns the basic or hydrogen bonding function of the sulphur atom.
