Nucleolus-like Inclusions in the Cytoplasm of HeLa Cells treated with Puromycin

Abstract

CYTOPLASMIC inclusions containing RNA have been noted in HeLa cells treated with puromycin1, an anti-metabolite which is a selective inhibitor of protein synthesis2,3. It is now clear that these inclusions appear in a large proportion of treated cells when high concentrations of puromycin are used, and that these structures bear a resemblance to nucleoli as regards morphological appearances and their dependence on continued synthesis of cellular RNA.
