Interrelationships between Amphetamine and Harmala Alkaloids

Abstract

IT has been shown1 that iproniazid increased the hypertensive effects of indirect sympathomimetic amines, without altering significantly those of the directly acting catecholamines. We suggested later2 that monoaminoxidase inhibitors could facilitate the release of catecholamines induced by indirectly acting sympathomimetic amines. In this communication it is reported that two Harmala alkaloids, harmaline and harmine, which are both monoaminoxidase inhibitors with a rapid and brief action, can release catecholamines under certain conditions.
