Abstract
DURING embryonic development, accumulation of neural components in the carotid body of human and animal subjects has been demonstrated1. However, efforts to demonstrate the presence of possible transmitter substances in the carotid body of adult animals have produced controversial results. While some have succeeded in showing a positive chromaffin reaction in the glomus cells of animals2,3, others have reported negative results with the human carotid body2,4. There is, however, some direct chemical evidence of the presence of noradrenaline in the carotid body of the calf5, and recently Pryse-Davies et al. have demonstrated in a single fluorimetric assay of a fresh human carotid body obtained at autopsy a high level of catecholamines4.
