Abstract
ASPARTATE transcarbamylase (ATC) catalyses transfer of the carbamyl group from carbamyl phosphate to L-aspartate yielding carbamyl aspartate. This reaction is the first step peculiar to de novo synthesis of pyrimidine bases. Lowenstein and Cohen1 described the distribution of ATCin tissues of the adult rat. Activity was high in liver, intestine, stomach, testis, kidney, lung, brain, and spleen; muscle contained less activity and there was negligible activity in blood and heart.
