Abstract
FOR the purpose of demonstrating the metabolism of furan compounds by micro-organisms, we have attempted to isolate from many soil samples those micro-organisms which can produce some enzyme systems cleaving furan rings. As a result, we obtained numerous strains capable of growth on various kinds of furan compounds such as 2-furoic acid, furfuryl alcohol, 2-furaldehyde, etc., in the presence of inorganic nitrogen and other inorganic supplements. These strains were shown not to grow if furan compounds were omitted.
