Abstract
THE conformational similarity between chloramphenicol and pyrimidine nucleotides has led us to the hypothesis that the antibiotic interferes with the attachment of an RNA molecule to the ribosome1,2. Similar suggestions have also been made by other workers3–5. We now wish to report experiments showing that the association between 14C-polyuridylic acid and purified ribosomes from E. coli is inhibited in vitro by chloramphenicol, whereas the association between 14C-phenylalanine-sRNA and ribosomes is not.
