Surface Preparation of Electrodes for Studies of the Electrical Properties of Dielectrics

Abstract

ONE of the major difficulties in the measurement of conduction currents and of the breakdown strength of homogeneous dielectrics is that of obtaining reproducible results. This communication shows that to obtain such results mechanical polishing of the electrodes is to be preferred to the use of electrolytic polishing. It has already been shown1 that in liquid dielectrics the scatter in breakdown values is smaller for mechanically polished than for electrolytically polished electrodes.
