Abstract
THE spread-F which is observed at equatorial latitudes varies in its appearance during the night1, but may be divided into two basic types, which have been termed equatorial type2 and temperate latitude type3 respectively. As it is known that irregularities giving rise to equatorial type spread-F are capable of scattering radio waves with frequencies greater than the critical frequency of the F layer, it was decided to carry out, at Accra, an investigation of the irregularities, using a back-scatter radar operating on a frequency of 18 Mc/s. Such an equipment has a number of advantages over the normal ionosonde, including greater sensitivity, and the possibility of using directional aerials.
