Terrestrial Heat Flow in Japan

Abstract

SINCE 1957 a survey of terrestrial heat flow has been conducted in Japan by this Institute1,2. As a result of this, heat-flow values have so far been determined at 39 localities in the Japanese Islands. In addition to these, 12 sea measurements have been made in the sea around Japan under a co-operative programme with the Japan Meteorological Agency on board the R.V. Ryofu Maru3. The results (Fig. 1) seem to indicate a definite pattern of heat-flow distribution in the area.
