Abstract
THE distribution of iodine-128 between the organic and inorganic fraction when irradiating methyliodide with thermal neutrons has been examined by many authors1–6. It has been shown that when irradiating on a neutron source with a high intensity of accompanying γ-radiation then the organic yield is about 50–60 per cent. On the other hand, while irradiating purified methyliodide on neutron sources with a low γ-radiation background the organic yield was about 100 per cent. When irradiated in the same conditions, but in the presence of very small quantities of elementary iodine, the organic yield rapidly decreased, at concentrations of 10−5–10−4 mol/l. It reached the value of organic yield about 50–60 per cent corresponding to the formal experimental conditions.
