Abstract
WHILE considerable work has been carried out on the exchanges of energy within the larger domestic animals1 little work has been done on the lower vertebrates. Some workers2–4 have investigated the efficiency of growth in fish, others5 have investigated various aspects of temperature adaptation in these animals. During the course of an investigation in this laboratory into the complete energy ‘balance sheet’ of goldfish at different temperatures an interesting relationship was discovered between food input and energy extraction efficiency.
