Abstract
EXPERIMENTAL lathyrism was produced originally more than a quarter of a century ago1 by feeding rats seeds of the flowering sweet pea—Lathyrus odoratus. Since then a number of compounds, including semicarbazide, have been tested to determine their lathyrogenic activity. This experiment was to show the changes produced in larvæ of the South African toad (Xenopus laevis) when semicarbazide was added to the aquarium water.
