Abstract
THERE are difficulties in defining rate constants for the reactions of solids1. Since a rate constant describes a rate it must have the dimension (time)−1. Constants with other dimensions with respect to time may exist in an empirical relation between extent of reaction and time, but they should never be wrongly identified as rate constants.
