Growth and Development of Leaves from Intercalary Meristems in Phalaris arundinacea L.

Abstract

THERE is general agreement1–4 that the differentiation of phytomer units from the vegetative shoot apex of grasses initially involves the appearance of periclinal divisions in the dermatogen, and that these give rise to a series of alternate distichously arranged ridges which mature basipetally. The blade of the phytomer develops as a result of a combination of marginal growth from periclinal divisions and apical growth from a rib meristem. This eventually transforms the ridge into a crescent, then a collar, and finally a hood over the apex. Shortly thereafter the ligule is formed from the epidermal cells on the upper surface of the blade.
