Abstract
IN earlier publications1–4 we have shown possibilities of preferential inhibition of tumour growth by antimetabolites of hexose monophosphate (HMP) pathway. A number of derivatives of thiophenedicarboxylic acid have been prepared and tested for their anticancer properties. Results with thiophene 2,5 dicarboxylic acid (TDA) and 2,5 dicarbethoxy-3,4 dihydroxy thiophene (DICETOL) have already been published3,4. Results with other compounds will be published in detail elsewhere. One of the compounds synthesized in this series was thiodiglycollic acid (TDGA). In this compound carbon numbers 3 and 4 from thiophene have been completely dispensed with. This, in a way, amounted to an attempt to identify the active groupings which may be responsible for the anticancer properties.
