Irregularities in the E s Layer of the Ionosphere

Abstract

IT has been shown from oblique incidence back-scatter experiments that the equatorial type of sporadic E ionization (E s) contains irregularities which are elongated in a north–south direction, that is, along the direction of the Earth's magnetic field1. On the other hand, observations made at high latitudes have shown that the auroral type of E s layer contains irregularities which are elongated in an east–west direction, that is, perpendicular to the field2. The results in the second case were based on observations of the diffraction pattern produced on the ground by a reflected wave. No corresponding observations relating to the E s layer in medium latitudes have been reported.
