Abstract
THE importance of free fatty acids as the main form in which fat is mobilized from depots and extracted by tissues has been stressed during the past few years. Several methods for their estimation in plasma are now available. One of the most widely used is that of Gordon et al. 1, which seems to measure the long-chain fatty acids2 more specifically than any other. The exact composition of the fatty acids which are extracted from human plasma by this method has not, however, been determined. Their composition is of importance in metabolic studies where a knowledge of the mean molecular weight, double-bond index, and oxygen equivalent may be required.
