Effect of Coumarin on the Germination and Growth of Rice Seedlings

Abstract

UNSATURATED lactones like coumarin, parasorbic acid, etc., came to prominence after the postulation of blastocholine, the group of unknown substances from the ripe fruits which were found to inhibit the germination of corn seeds. Work was further extended to study the physiological behaviour1 as well as cytological effects2 produced by these unsaturated lactones. Coumarin at high concentrations has been reported to have inhibitory effects in several plants3–7. The present investigation was designed to study the effect of coumarin (the lactone of o-hydroxy-cis-cinnamic acid) at various concentrations on the germination and growth of rice seedlings.
