Abstract
THE colour centre which is responsible for the colour of smoky quartz has been described by O'Brien1. The precursor depends upon an aluminium ion substituted for silicon with an associated interstitial lithium ion for charge compensation. The centre consists of a hole trapped in the vicinity of the substitutional aluminium, the lithium having trapped an electron and migrated from the scene. We have now found that combinations of other ions with aluminium in silica powder produce an analogous centre under γ-radiation and have investigated the thermoluminescence of the pure and doped powders after exposure to γ-radiation.
