Abstract
THE decomposition of water by the action of ionizing radiations can be represented by the overall expression1,2 The relative extents of the radical (H, OH) and molecular yields (H2, H2O2) have been determined for a number of radiations of different ionization densities. The molecular hydrogen yield (GWH2) has been measured directly, in the presence of different solutes (for example, bromide, nitrite3). On the other hand, the molecular hydrogen peroxide yield (GwH2o2) in aqueous solutions irradiated in the presence of oxygen can ordinarily be measured only indirectly4,5. (G = molecules/100 eV.)
