Extracellular Products in Pure Cultures of a Brown Alga

Abstract

USING antibiotics in a way similar to those described by Fish1 and Spencer2 for other algae, we have obtained Ectocarpus confervoides in bacteria-free uni-algal culture. Bacteria-free cultures of Phaeophyceae (Waerniella lucifuga and Ectocarpus parasitica) have been grown by Provasoli, McLaughlin and Droop3, but these do not appear to be particularly suitable for physiological study. It is clearly desirable that studies with pure cultures should be made if exact information about the metabolism of this group of algae is to be obtained.
