Abstract
SYNTHESIS of cellulose from glucose by washed cells of Acetobacter xylinum is not inhibited by iodoacetate1. It would therefore appear that the energy required for the formation of cellulose from glucose in A. xylinum may be generated via a pathway which does not involve the iodoacetate-sensitive glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase of this organism. In an attempt to find such an energy-yielding reaction, crude extracts of a ‘celluloseless’ mutant2 of A. xylinum were employed. Although the enzyme-catalysed reaction described below was also demonstrable in the wild type A. xylinum, the mutant was used because of its relatively abundant growth in shake cultures.
